The Barrier Reef Clownfish is one of the more sought after species as they are relatively hard to find. Adults have an orange-brown body-color with two white bars with black edging encircling the body. The first bar is on the head behind the eyes and maybe thin and broken. The second bar is on the body below the dorsal fin. The caudal peduncle and caudal fin are white. Juveniles are generally brown with three white stripes. In sub-adults, the coloring changes to a dull yellow with two white stripes. They average around 5 inches in length between 4.7–5.1 in (12–13 cm).
