Top 10 Fixes to Turn the Nasty, Brown Stage of Your Saltwater Tank Away

The Ugly stage or the new stage of my tank is relentless. There are top 10 things to get you past this:

Be Patient

An ounce of patience can be the only cure. Unfortunately, it happens to everyone; the ugly brown is inevitable. So, if you can power through it and be patient to get to the other side, this will not be your problem.

This can be hard. The tank looks terrible, and it is in your living room, and everybody's yelling at you, but often when you wait a month or two, it will clear itself up. And because it did it naturally, it probably won't come back.

Turn the Lights Off

Many of these brown, ugly, nasty-looking things are photosynthetic, which means that your lights are on if fueling the problem.

Even turning them down can help. It depends on your tank goals, especially if you don't have any corals.

You can turn the lights off and watch it go away. Also, keep in mind how bright the lights are. The higher the PAR, the more the algae.

So, keep the light low.

Acclimation Mode on Lights

Most LEDs these days come with a built-in-acclimation-mode. Using those modes increases and slowly brings you to more intense light rather than just packing it all in once.

Using these acclimation modes for over a month or two to get you to your goal can help the non-photosynthetic or the better, or the goof things you want to take into your tan before the photosynthetic ones do.

Tangs for Algae

If algae are your problem, get some Tangs. The Tangs gang eats algae all day long. There are different types of mouth out there, so get the right tang for the algae in your tank.

You can also mix and match and go for longer or filamentous, or the beginning of algae.

Cleanup Crew For Sand

If you have a problem with sand, get something that is solved for the sand. So, sand sifting Gobies, Starfish, the Nassauris snail, something that keeps the sand bed churning.

You will have to do some manuls cleaning of sand.

Wiping Out Cyano

If cyano is taking over your tank, don't be afraid of Chemiclean or red slime remover. Like an inevitable problem many people have, it is the easiest possible solution to get rid of your headache of slimes.

Dinos

If your slime problem has bubbles and is brown, it may be dinos. Dinos are an issue, especially when Chemiclear or red slime remover's not taking care of the problem. Therefore, they will need special treatment.

Consider Bacterial Solution

If used consistently, these could probably work. The bacterial solution takes over the problem and eradicates it over time.

At Least Check Nutrients

There is no magic because these pests in your tank can cause the ugly stage to thrive in different environments.

Some of them are theorized to thrive in zero nitrates and zero phosphate environments where they outcompete other things that require those things.

But, the opposite end of this is also terrible.

Therefore, at least check your nutrients, and it can be part of making sure you are not feeding the solutions or creating a complex environment.

Copepods

You can consider Coperpodes. These tiny little vacuum cleaning machines often clean up some of that brown algae.

Eventually, Copepods will find their way into your tank, but adding them at the beginning can be a great help.
