Chemical Media for Beginners (do You Need It?)

Let's get all your chemical media-related questions answered in this one article.

Chemical media is media that can be added to your filter to make your water crystal clear by absorbing and removing toxins, organic compounds, phosphate, medication, and even odor.

However, it is not necessary in your aquarium. Though it is optional, if you want your tank water to be more clearer, chemical media is one of the many things that can help you get there.

Also, it does exhaust itself and needs to be replaced every 30 to 35 days. It can, however, be recharged and reused after we explain it in a letter.

Where you place your chemical media is also equally important. It is directed in the direction of water in your tank. The water should first hit your mechanical media, then bio media, and finally, the chemical media.

Types of Chemical Media

The below product comes in loose bottles, and to install them in your tank, you'll need media bags. It will help you place them in the filter without any spillage.

Ensure you rinse out all the chemical media outside of your aquarium to get rid of any dust or residue that you don't want in your tank.

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a cheap but effective chemical media. It absorbs toxins, odor, and impurities in the water. However, when it is exhausted, it must be removed; if not, it will eventually leach all those toxins they absorbed right back into the water.

Purigen

Not only does Purigen absorb all the things as activated carbon, but it can also release nitrite and nitrate from water indirectly.

It can also be reused. Once it is exhausted, you can soak it in bleached water., and soon it will recharge, turning back to the yellowish-original color.

Chemi-Pure Blue

In this chemical media, you get the best of both worlds. The only downside is it can't be recharged. Once exhausted, it needs to be removed and replaced. It's also the most expensive of the three.
