Top 7 Worst Beginner Fish (Warning)

This article will talk about some of the worst beginner fish. But, here, we are not asking you not to buy fish; instead, take it as a disclaimer before you consider getting a lot of species.

These fish can be great beginner fish, but some have things that many people don't know and need to know before they get them.

1. Plecos

We are not talking about Bristle Plecos, but the Common Plecos. Often, when these fish are sold in the pet shop, they normally come in very small, and they are similarly sized to a lot of Bristlenose Plecos.

You might pick it up but wouldn't know what to do with them. They look very similar to Bristlenose, but in about a year, it becomes very obvious that this fish is not a Bristlenost.

Common Plecos get massive and can cause many issues in a small aquarium. Therefore, it is best to keep them in a huge monster fish aquarium of at least our foot.

You will run into any problems with this fish, and a lot of the time, they can be sold as beginner fish. But it is best not to delve into much later in the hobby.

2. Neon Tetras

They are beautiful fish, and they can be very easy to take care of. They are also known to live for almost ten years when properly cared for. These fish are on this list because they are difficult to take care of, but the quality of Neon Tetras within the market doesn't seem to be that great.

Many Neon Tetras have Micro Bacterium that comes in with them, and it is similar to a fish Tuberculosis, but not many people know what it is. This disease is commonly called Neon Tetra disease. It is a white tumor disease that rocks up on a Neon Tetra over time.

Therefore, it is better to stay away from this fish unless you fish a good specimen.

3. Guppies

Like the Neon Tetras, these fishes also have a lot of issues when it comes to importing them into countries and then to your local fish shops.

Guppies are produced in massive quantities all across the world. They are super popular, and they situated their place in the hobby.

But there is a big difference between good quality Guppy and bad quality Guppies. A lot of time, this fish comes with internal parasites, which will become a problem after a month you have got them because they will become skinny adn get bad at swimming and will eventually end up dying.

Another issue with Guppies is that they don't live a very long time. So most of the time, by they are put in your aquarium, they are nearly already dead.

So, they will live for only a very short period before they eventually pass on when we get them unless you get them as babies or very young fish, but this doesn't happen most of the time.

So, these fish will survive in the aquarium and can be slightly easy for many people to keep, but there are many things you need to learn about how to care for Guppies. Whereas a beginner fish should be something, you just throw into the aquarium and forget about.

4. Oscar

Oscars are a really cute fish in the hobby. However, most of the time, you will see them very small.

They are very easy to fish to take care of. They will eat anything you put into the aquarium; they are very easy to take care of. They are beginner fish, but they are not on this list because these fishes get huge.

And similar to PLecos, where you will need quite a lot of space to take care of one of these fish properly. So, before getting this fish, do understand what you are getting into, and an Oscar is not going to suit many people who plan to keep a small aquarium in the home.

So, unless you want to get a bigger aquarium, the Oscars must be off your list.

5. Angelfish

Angelfish are, in some aspects, a really good beginner fish because they are easy to take care of if they come from a good source. You can keep them in bigger groups or just by themselves, and they are going to do great, however, sometimes, people like to buy two and three of them.

But, these fishes can also be very aggressive, not to others but to each other.

Unless there are about six to eight Angelfish around them, they will end up bullying one Angelfish to death.

So, it is best to keep only one Angelfish by itself or in a group of six. If you have a group of six, they will be able to attack each other because their attention will always be super divided.

Once they reach sexual maturity, they will start beating each other up, which will become an issue for you.

6. Goldfish

These fish have their place on the beginner-friendly list of all the other species on this list. It can be a great option for people who want to keep them in a big aquarium and want constantly clean up waste.

Goldfish create a massive amount of waste that people aren't aware of when they buy them. It is one of those things that you want to keep by themselves in a 55-gallon fish and watch them grow up, adn you want to feed them and look at them.

Unless you are keeping your Goldfish, they don't have a place for many beginner situations. So, if you are willing to add Goldfish, it is better to go with Betta.

7. Barbs

Barbs can be a good beginner fish. They are easy to take care of, they stay relatively small and look fantastic.

But, they can be aggressive, and if they are with fish that can have long fins in the tank, these guys will end up bullying those fish or biting their fins, and they can be quite agressive.

You need to be very careful when you get Barbs most of the time. This is because they are sold as community fish but aren't excellent community fish.
