How to Get Rid of Red Slime Algae?

It's common for red slime algae to pop up in your reef tank repeatedly. In this article, we'll show a trick for dealing with it.

Why do we get red slime?

Red slime is a little bit of nuance algae. You usually get it in the spot where the tank experiences the most minor flow. Generally, you'll find it in places where you have dead zones.

Most of the time, you can get rid of it by throwing a power head and not giving it a chance to grow.

Another reason could be a nutrient imbalance. So, if your nitrate and phosphates are not in the normal seawater parameters.

Chemiclean

If you cannot beat red slime algae, you can use Chemiclean. Your skimmer will go crazy because it will kill the algae.

However, ensure you get it all out first because you can create a resistant strain of red slime bacteria. To take it out of the water column, use a skimmer.

Siphoning

Siphoning the sand in the targeted areas also works because sometimes the algae flare up due to a lot of nutrient build-up.

However, this trick is not for you if you have gravel substrates.

Make sure you don't get the sand out. Just siphon enough to get the algae out of the tank. Keep your auto-top off during the siphoning process.

Leave the tank for a few days to see if the algae is again flaring up. If it does, hit it with the gravel wash again, and it will be gone.
