Hollywood Stunner Chalice Coral: Complete Care Guide

This article talks about one of the most popular corals in the hobby, the Hollywood Stunner Chalice Coral.

Prices: You can expect to get a frag for $20. However, if you are looking for a nice big piece, you might have to spend about $100.

Care Level: Moderate, and that too only because sometimes, it might be difficult to get them to eat. Otherwise, they are quite easy to keep.

Tank Size: It doesn't matter; just remember these guys are going to grow out continuously throughout their lives, so you want to make sure that you are fragging them at the right time. This way, they will not cover and shade above your corals at the bottom.

Water Parameter

  • Temperature: 72-78 F.
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
  • dKH: 8-12

You definitely want to keep a heater in your tank. That way, your coral will thrive in the little piece of ocean. Also, be sure to keep the salinity stable.

These corals are slow acclimators. They are fragile whenever going into a new tank. So, drip acclimation is very important when putting them in the tank. When you try to rush the process, they can often bleach off.

Appearance

Color: They have a very beautiful blue body with lime-shaded polka dots, which are actually their mouth. They are very pretty up close and from far away. So, they are a great coral to have, especially if you have LED lights that like to shine blue because it will make these colors really pop.

Diet

They are photosynthetic. So, they feed on light and the bacterias in the water all throughout the day. But, it is also good to feed them liquid food. This way, they will grow stronger and faster in your tank. So, whenever possible, try squirting some liquid food into the powerheads, and you can notice their feeder tentacles coming out.

Origin

Nowadays, they are aquacultured most of the time. However, originally, they were from the indo-pacific area.

Venomous

Yes, they are venomous corals. But, only those feeder tentacles can sting other surrounding corals whenever they feed, so be careful where it is starting to grow and where you place them because they can grow out.

They will keep growing, so make sure to keep them on their separate island to prevent them from taking over the tank.

Placement

They can be placed anywhere in the tank. However, many like to keep them in the middle of the tank for the perfect lighting.

Current

You want a medium current for good feeding that blows everything around so that they can eat well. If the current is too low, it can cause detritus and hair algae to grow on top of them in those dead spots. So, make sure you have a good solid current flowing all over the coral.

Too much current can cause it to fall off its mantle, and with this coral being very fragile, it can cause him to split. So, you do not want to have a high current in the tank.

Lighting

Moderate! From lows of 30 PAR to all the way up to 150 PAR will do great. But, the color will fade with too bright a light. So, make sure your LEDs have an acclimation cycle on.

If you do start to see its color fade from the edge, whether it is turning a brownish color, a white color, you definitely want to make some changes to your lighting. But, most of the time, it is because of too bright light.

Fragging

Fragging these corals is fairly easy, as you can simply break off a piece with little to no force. However, they are fragile, which is good for fragging, but not for placing in your tank at the beginning because they can break.
