Guppies Eat Their Babies | How to Reduce Cannibalism

In this article, you'll learn how to keep your Guppy fries in the same tank as the parent fish without them getting eaten.

As we know, Guppies and other liver-bearing fishes like Platies are cannibals. They eat their own babies or fry if they are able to. This is not a good thing if you want to raise these little babies.

So, here are simple yet effective ways to keep them alive without using another tank.

Feeding

Just like humans, fishes need a certain amount of protein and amino acids in their diet. When they lack these proteins, they start to go in search of another form of protein inside the tank - the fry.

This doesn't mean you have to overfeed your fish, but you have to feed your fish healthy proteins such as food containing Salmon, Herring, and Shrimp rather than fish meal, flour, and wheat.

Another really good food to feed is vegetables. Just soak it in some water to soften it and put it inside your tank.

Hiding Spots

Having huts with plants attached to them is a really good source of hiding spots for fries. Moss balls are also very effective for a Guppy fry tank. They provide three essential things - filtration, a source of food, and a hiding spot.

Every fish keeper has a preference on which plant they like to keep the most. But Aponogeton Ulvaceus is a great option. It provides various places for your adult, and Guppy fry to hire in. But if you're not able to find it, a little clump of Java Moss mixed with Guppy grass will also work great for repelling the fish.

Keeping it Dark

You can drape a towel or a blanket over your tank to keep it dark enough for your adult Guppies to see baby Guppies. However, if you have lots of live plants, this one might not work best for you.
