Apple Snails Care Guide

Apple snails can be found in most if not all, local fish stores. They look great and can easily spice up your aquarium regarding tank mates. And while they are docile, there's much to know about them.

The Apple snails come from the tropical waters around the world. They come in various colors and date back to when the earth's land was still divided.

These snails are compatible with a wide variety of fishes in the hobby, and although some of the more aggressive fishes like Cichlid might consider them snails, you need to keep them safe.

Diet

They are an omnivore and feed primarily on algae. While these snails can eliminate some algae, it would take hundreds of snails to make a difference. Plus, they'll also scavenge the aquarium for any leftover food. Feed them sinking food.

They also require calcium in their diet. It is constantly growing out of its shell, and a lack of calcium will result in the deterioration that can kill the snail.

Breeding

These snails have both lungs and gills, allowing them to breed quickly. The female snails will drop hundreds of eggs outside the water, and as they hatch, the baby snails will start falling into the water, where they'll begin to feed on algae.

So if you are not prepared for these many snails, you can push the cluster of eggs back into the water.

However, these snails can also escape your aquarium. Therefore you need to have a tight lead and all the openings sealed.

Water Parameters

Regarding water parameters, these snails are quite adaptive except for the most healthy and neutral pH levels. They should be kept at a temperature between 72-80 F.

Though these snails are tiny, they consume food and produce waste. So to keep your aquarium healthy, you should only need one snail per gallon in the tank.
