Tanakas Pygmy Wrasse

General information

Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse is a cautious rock dweller with reddish-orange body accented with four thin white bands, plus two false eyespots above and below the tail. Provide a peaceful environment with plenty of caves and hiding spots as Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse if treated will primarily stay within the rocks. Peaceful fish to help encourage this shy wrasse to come out of the rockwork. They will not bother any corals or invertebrates making them a perfect fish for the reef aquarium. A single male can be kept with a group of females that is introduced prior to or at the same time as the male. These wrasses like to jump, so a tight-fitting canopy is recommended.

Cautions

Wrasse are considered jumpers make sure your aquarium has a tight-fitting canopy or screen cover to prevent the Wrasse from jumping out of your aquarium. Wrasse have been known to jump through the smallest of holes in a canopy. 

Wrasses prefer to have a 2″ (5cm) sandbed to allow them to burrow into the sand to sleep or when they feel like they are in danger. Some people with bare bottom tanks have also added a Tupperware with a 2″ deep sand bed to accommodate the wrasse’s needs. 

They are generally peaceful but may display aggression towards members of the same species.
