The average adults is 9 inches and has a life span of about 16 years, some can even reach 20 or more. This species is very territorial towards its own kind so it is risky to keep it in groups unless the aquarium is very large, nonetheless, it can be kept in a community aquarium as long as its tankmates are large fish, smaller fish will be seen as prey. In terms of aquarium conditions, this species prefers water temperatures that range between 73.4ºF to 80.6ºF and aquariums with lots of rocks, broad leaf plants and caves.
This species is omnivorous. They do best with a varied diet so it is recommended to feed them pellets, prawns, Ghost Shrimp, flakes and plant-based foods like spirulina tablets.
This species can be found in the Congo River basin in Africa.
