About Starfire Red Danio Glofish

General information

These fish have fusiform, laterally compressed bodies and are usually 2 inches, however, there are records of a 2.5 inches fish in captivity. Starfire Red Danios are genetically modified to have fluorescent colors, they are fluorescent red with stripes along the sides of their body. To keep these fish in captivity, water pH should be between 6.0 and 8.0 and water temperature should range from 64ºF to 75ºF. The tank should have a sandy substrate, open areas for swimming, a bit of current and plants. It is a peaceful species that can be kept in a community tank. It should be kept in groups of at least 5 in a 20 gallon tank or more.

Diet & nutrition

This species is omnivorous. In the wild, it feeds on zooplankton and aquatic insects. In an aquarium, it can be fed with dried, live and frozen foods.

Determining sex

Mature females are rounder and larger than males while males are more colorful.

Breeding & spawning

These fish are egg scatterers that exhibit no parental care. To induce spawning, small amounts of cool water should be added to the tank every few hours until it is completely full, also, the fish should be fed with live or frozen foods. Eggs hatch in 1 to 2 days and the fry take a few days to become free swimming.

Origination

This species is native to India. It can be found in streams and rivers, it prefers shallow, slow moving waters.
