About Nanochromis Cichlid

General information

The female is more colorful than the male and is usually black with vertical white stripes. These fish can reach 3.5 inches. To keep this species in captivity, water pH should be between 6.0 and 8.0 and water temperatures should range from 72ºF to 82ºF. The tank should have plenty of rocks, plants and driftwood. It can be kept in a community aquarium as long as its tankmates are of the same size and attitude.

Diet & nutrition

This species is omnivorous. It can be fed with bloodworms, Daphnia, brine shrimp , flakes , pellets and its diet should be complemented with vegetable matter.

Determining sex

The female is more colorful than the male.

Breeding & spawning

During breeding, the female’s belly develops a red coloration. The female lays her eggs in a cave and the male will fertilize them. The fry hatch after 5 days and can be fed with newly hatched brine shrimp and crushed flakes.

Origination

This species can be found in Lake Mai-Ndombe, Africa.
