About Marbled Headstander

General information

The Marbled Headstander can grow up to 8 inches in length and requires a tank size of at least 50 gallons. They are peaceful fish that can be kept with other non-aggressive species. They prefer a planted tank with moderate to high lighting and a sandy substrate. The ideal water temperature for this species is between 73°F and 79°F.

Diet & nutrition

The Marbled Headstander is an omnivore and will eat a variety of foods, including flake food, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. They also enjoy vegetable matter, such as blanched spinach or zucchini.

Determining sex

It can be difficult to determine the sex of the Marbled Headstander. Males tend to be slightly larger and more colorful than females.

Breeding & spawning

Breeding the Marbled Headstander can be challenging and requires a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water. Spawning typically occurs in the early morning, and the female will lay up to 500 eggs on the underside of leaves. The parents should be removed from the breeding tank once spawning is complete.

Diseases

The Marbled Headstander is relatively hardy and not susceptible to many diseases. However, they can be prone to ich and other parasitic infections if water conditions are not kept in check.

Origination

The Marbled Headstander is native to South America, specifically the Amazon Basin.

Cautions

The Marbled Headstander is generally a peaceful fish, but they can become aggressive towards other species during breeding or if they feel threatened. They are also known to jump, so be sure to have a secure lid on their tank.

Acclimation process

It is important to acclimate the Marbled Headstander slowly to their new tank environment. Float the bag in the tank for 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature, then open the bag and add a small amount of tank water to the bag every 5-10 minutes for about an hour before releasing the fish into the tank.
