About Hujeta Gar

General information

The Hujeta Gar is a predatory fish that requires plenty of swimming space, hiding places, and a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping. They can grow up to 12 inches in length, and the minimum recommended tank size is 75 gallons. They prefer neutral to slightly acidic water (pH of 6.0-7.0) with soft to medium hardness (dH of 5-12) and a temperature range of 75-82°F. This species can be aggressive towards smaller fish or fish that are slow-moving and should not be kept with small invertebrates such as shrimp or snails.

Diet & nutrition

The Hujeta Gar is carnivorous and prefers live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, insects, and crustaceans. They can also be fed high-quality commercial pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous fish.

Determining sex

The Hujeta Gar is difficult to sex visually.

Breeding & spawning

There is limited information available about breeding the Hujeta Gar in captivity.

Diseases

The Hujeta Gar is generally hardy and disease-resistant, but may be susceptible to common fish diseases if water quality is not maintained.

Origination

The Hujeta Gar is native to South America, specifically the Amazon Basin and the Orinoco River Basin.

Cautions

The Hujeta Gar is a predatory fish and should not be kept with smaller or slower-moving fish. They may also jump out of the tank if not provided with a tight-fitting lid.

Acclimation process

When introducing the Hujeta Gar to a new tank, it is important to acclimate them slowly over a period of several hours to avoid shock and stress.
