Harlequin Rasbora

Harlequin Rasbora, scientifically known as Rasbora heteromorpha, is a popular and peaceful freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. They are relatively small, reaching an average size of 2-3cm, making them suitable for smaller aquariums. They are known for their striking coloration of red and black on their bodies and fins, which makes them a popular choice among aquarium hobbyists.

Harlequin Rasboras are omnivorous and will feed on a variety of foods, including live, frozen, and flake foods. A balanced diet that includes both protein and plant-based foods is recommended. They are known to be particularly fond of small crustaceans and insects.

Female Harlequin Rasboras are typically larger and fuller-bodied than males, and their coloration is less vibrant than males.

Harlequin Rasboras are egg-scatterers and will lay their eggs on plants and other surfaces in the aquarium. To encourage breeding, provide them with a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water conditions, and the temperature should be kept around 26°C. Once the eggs are laid, they will hatch in about 24-36 hours, and the fry will become free-swimming in about 4-5 days.

Harlequin Rasboras are relatively hardy fish and are not prone to any specific diseases. However, like all fish, they are susceptible to common aquarium diseases such as fin rot, ich, and bacterial infections. Maintaining a clean and well-maintained aquarium with proper water conditions can help prevent these diseases.

Harlequin Rasbora is native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, specifically in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Harlequin Rasboras are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them a great addition to community aquariums. However, they are relatively small, and care should be taken when selecting tank mates to ensure that they do not become prey. Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish.

Before adding Harlequin Rasboras to your aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly to the new water conditions. Float the sealed bag containing the fish in the aquarium for 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature. Then, add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag every 5-10 minutes until the bag is full. Finally, use a net to gently transfer the fish into the aquarium.
