Green Neon Tetra

General information

The Green Neon Tetra is a small freshwater fish, measuring up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length. They are known for their bright green iridescent stripe that runs along their side, which contrasts with their silver body. These tetras are peaceful and can be kept in a community aquarium with other peaceful fish of similar size. They prefer soft, acidic water with a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).

Green Neon Tetras are omnivorous and will readily accept flake, freeze-dried, and frozen foods. A varied diet including high-quality flake food, small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms will help keep them healthy and vibrant.

Males tend to be more colorful and have a slimmer body than females. During breeding, males will develop a more intense green stripe, while the female's stripe will become more opaque.

Breeding Green Neon Tetras is not difficult. A separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water is recommended. Males will begin to display courtship behavior by chasing females and showing off their colors. Females will lay up to 100 eggs, which will hatch in approximately 24 hours. The fry should be fed small amounts of newly hatched brine shrimp or other small foods.

Like most fish, Green Neon Tetras are susceptible to common fish diseases such as fin rot, ich, and velvet. Keeping the aquarium clean and maintaining good water quality can help prevent disease outbreaks.

Green Neon Tetras are native to the Rio Negro and Orinoco River basins in South America.

Green Neon Tetras are generally peaceful and not aggressive towards other fish, but they may become targets of aggression from larger or more aggressive fish in the aquarium.

It is important to properly acclimate Green Neon Tetras to the aquarium water before releasing them into the tank. The drip acclimation method is recommended, where the tetras are slowly introduced to the tank water by dripping the tank water into the bag or container they arrived in.
