About Empire Gudgeon

General information

The Empire Gudgeon is a small freshwater fish species that can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length. They are native to Australia and can be found in rivers, streams, and ponds throughout the country. These fish are known for their unique shape, which is elongated and compressed, and their coloration can vary from brown to olive green.

Diet & nutrition

In their natural habitat, Empire Gudgeons feed on a variety of small invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans, and worms. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food, as well as live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Determining sex

Males are generally larger and more colorful than females. During breeding season, males will develop more vibrant colors and will display a more aggressive behavior towards other males.

Breeding & spawning

Empire Gudgeons are egg layers and can be bred in captivity. They require a breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots such as caves or PVC pipes. The breeding tank should also have soft, acidic water with a pH of around 6.5-7.0 and a temperature of around 77-82°F (25-28°C). Females can lay up to 200 eggs, which hatch within a few days. The fry should be fed small, frequent meals of newly hatched brine shrimp or micro worms.

Diseases

Empire Gudgeons are generally hardy fish and not susceptible to many diseases. However, they can be affected by common freshwater fish diseases such as ich and fin rot. Maintaining good water quality and avoiding overfeeding can help prevent these diseases.

Origination

Empire Gudgeons are native to Australia and can be found in rivers, streams, and ponds throughout the country.

Cautions

Empire Gudgeons are generally peaceful and not aggressive towards other fish species. However, they can be territorial towards their own kind, especially during breeding season. Providing plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers can help reduce aggression.

Acclimation process

When introducing Empire Gudgeons to a new aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly to avoid shock. Float the sealed bag containing the fish in the aquarium for 10-15 minutes to allow the water temperature to equalize. Then, slowly add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag over the course of 30-45 minutes. Finally, use a net to transfer the fish to the aquarium.
