Eartheater Cichlid

General information

Eartheater Cichlids are large, peaceful fish that are native to South America. They have a unique ability to sift through substrate, making them popular in aquariums with sandy or gravel substrates. They can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length and require a tank with a minimum capacity of 75 gallons (283 liters). They prefer warm water temperatures between 76-84°F (24-29°C) and a pH range of 6.5-7.5.

Eartheater Cichlids are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, they can be fed a high-quality pellet or flake food supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and krill.

Males are typically larger and more colorful than females. During spawning, males will display vibrant colors and extended finnage. Females will have a more rounded belly when they are ready to breed.

Eartheater Cichlids are monogamous and will pair up for breeding. They will create a nest in the substrate and lay their eggs. The male will then fertilize the eggs and both parents will guard the nest until the fry hatch. The fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp or finely crushed flake food.

Eartheater Cichlids are generally hardy fish and are not prone to many diseases. However, they can be susceptible to common freshwater fish diseases such as ich, fungal infections, and bacterial infections.

Eartheater Cichlids are native to South America, specifically the Amazon Basin, where they can be found in slow-moving rivers and tributaries.

Eartheater Cichlids are generally peaceful fish but can become territorial during breeding. They should be kept with fish of similar size and temperament to avoid aggression. Additionally, they require a spacious tank and can be messy eaters, so proper filtration is essential.

When introducing Eartheater Cichlids to a new tank, they should be acclimated slowly to prevent shock. The fish should be placed in a plastic bag filled with the water they were transported in and floated in the tank for 15-20 minutes to allow the temperature to equalize. Water from the tank should be added to the bag every 5 minutes until the bag is full. The fish can then be gently released into the tank.
