It has a distinct appearance, with a broad and flattened head and a large mouth that extends upwards like a frog's mouth. The body is elongated and covered in small, bony plates, with a dark brown to black coloration that resembles chocolate.

In captivity, they can be fed a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small pieces of fish or shrimp. They have a voracious appetite and should be fed small amounts frequently throughout the day.
