This species can be distinguished from other species of the same genus by a combination of individual characters of the males like the existence of an upper pectoral spot present; a dark band bellows the lower lip and a small round caudal spot. There are two types of males, the so-called yellow males, these have bright yellow cheeks and blue males, these have a blue lower region of the head.
Species in the Apistograma genus are mainly carnivores and can be fed with live foods and frozen foods like brine shrimp and Artemia, the same seems goes for this species, however, there is not much information about this species yet.
Mature males are larger and more colorful than females.
This species can be found in the river Guaporé in Bolivia and Brazil.
