Water parameters

Temp 76-80 F Temperature

Maintaining a stable and appropriate temperature is critical for the survival of aquatic life.

pH 7.8 - 8.4 potential of Hydrogen

Measuring the acidity or alkalinity of water on a 0–14 scale, where 7 is neutral, 7 is alkaline.

NO3 1-20 ppm Nitrate

While less toxic than ammonia, high nitrate levels (above 40–80 ppm) are important to monitor because they can cause fish stress, stunted growth, and harmful algae blooms.

NO2 <0.0001 ppm Nitrite

It is a highly toxic, intermediate compound in the nitrogen cycle produced from broken-down ammonia

PO4 0.01 - 0.1 ppm Phosphate

It is essential for plant development but must be managed, as excess levels trigger nuisance algae blooms and inhibit coral calcification.

NH3 <0.1 ppm Ammonia

It is the primary killer of aquarium fish, causing gill damage, stress, and death

Ca 380 - 450 ppm Calcium

Supporting the growth, skeletal structure, and shell formation of corals, mollusks, crustaceans, and coralline algae

KH 8 - 12 dKH Alkalinity

It acts as a shield, neutralizing acids to prevent dangerous pH "crashes" that can harm fish, corals, and plants.

Mg 1200 - 1400 ppm Magnesium

It enables coral growth by supporting skeletal formation, assists in metabolic processes, and ensures that calcium is available for corals, clams, and coralline algae.

SG 1.023 - 1.026 SG Salinity

Essential for maintaining stable, natural water parameters, proper osmoregulation, and stress-free environments for marine fish and corals

ORP 250 - 400 mV Oxidation-Reduction Potential

A higher positive mV indicates clean, oxygen-rich water with high water quality, while low readings indicate high pollution.

About Seaweed Blenny

General information

The Seaweed Blenny, also known as the Marine Rockskipper Blenny, is a small, colorful species of blenny that is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles to Senegal, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. This species can grow up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length, but they usually grow up to 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) in captivity. The Seaweed Blenny has a long and slender body with a pointed head and a small mouth. Its body is covered with small scales, which make it appear shiny. The coloration of this species is variable, but it typically has a greenish-brown base color with darker markings and spots.

Diet & nutrition

The Seaweed Blenny is primarily an herbivorous species and feeds on algae and other plant material. In captivity, they can be fed a variety of foods including seaweed sheets, algae-based pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood. It is recommended to feed this species small amounts of food multiple times a day rather than one large feeding.

Diseases

The Seaweed Blenny is generally a hardy species but may be susceptible to common marine diseases such as ich and bacterial infections. Providing good water quality, a balanced diet, and proper tank maintenance can help prevent these diseases.

Origination

The Seaweed Blenny is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles to Senegal, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.

Cautions

The Seaweed Blenny is generally a peaceful species and can be kept with other peaceful fish species. However, it may become territorial towards other blennies or similarly shaped fish species. It is also important to ensure that the aquarium has ample hiding spaces and live rock for this species to explore and establish its territory.

Acclimation process

Proper acclimation is important for the health and well-being of the Seaweed Blenny. The drip acclimation method is recommended to slowly adjust the fish to the water conditions in the aquarium. It is also recommended to quarantine the fish before introducing it to the display tank to prevent the spread of any potential diseases.
