Head and Tail Light Tetra

The Head and Tail Light Tetra, also known as the Beacon Tetra or the One-Spot Tetra, is a small freshwater fish belonging to the Characidae family. It is native to the Amazon River basin in South America.  The Head and Tail Light Tetra has a silver body with a distinct black spot at the base of its tail fin and a smaller red spot near the center of its body, resembling a traffic light. It has a torpedo-shaped body and a forked tail fin, and can grow up to 2.5 inches (6 cm) in length.  The Head and Tail Light Tetra prefers soft, slightly acidic water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C). It is important to maintain good water quality and perform regular water changes to keep the fish healthy.

This species is a peaceful schooling fish and is best kept in groups of at least six individuals. They are active swimmers and prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places. They will accept a variety of food including flakes, pellets, frozen and live foods.

The Head and Tail Light Tetra is an egg-scattering species that will lay its eggs among plants. They can be bred in pairs or in groups, with a separate breeding tank recommended. The breeding tank should have a substrate of marbles or mesh to prevent the adults from eating the eggs. The fry will hatch within 24 to 36 hours and can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes.
