More Details

General

This species is a hybrid that came after years of breeding, as such, it doesn’t exist in the wild. The individuals are red with blue markings all over their bodies and can reach 5 inches. To keep these fish in an aquarium, water temperature should range from 73.0ºF to 84.0ºF.  The tank should have plenty of rocks and caves, a sandy substrate and big open spaces for swimming. This species should be kept alone in groups of at least 2 females and one male, there should never be 2 males in the same tank. A 100 gallon tank is enough for such a group.

Diet & Nutrition

This species is omnivorous. They can be fed with live, frozen and dried foods. Their diet should also include vegetable matter like Spirullina flakes.

Determining Sex

Males are more colorful and have egg spots on their anal fin.

Breeding & Spawning

To breed this species in captivity, there should be 2 females and one male in the breeding tank. The female will lay her eggs, pick them up with her mouth and then follow the egg spots on the male’s anal fin until he releases his sperm and fertilizes the eggs in her mouth.

Diseases

These fish are susceptible to Malawi bloat if their diet isn’t well balanced.
