Why Do You Need a Clam in Your Reef Tank

Why does your reef tank need a giant clam? In this article, we will be discussing less about how to keep a giant clam and much more about the benefits you will witness by having a clam in your tank.

Majestic

You can pick from many varieties and get a lot of color in an aesthetic appeal from these corals in the tank. They are absolutely beautiful, and they change color based on the direction you look at them.

But an even bigger benefit than the way it looks is its filtering abilities. Throughout the day, it is going to pull water in, filter it and push clean water out. So, this is like a giant filter in your tank.

It is amazing, and it would make your tank look awesome. You will have a foot-long filter that looks beautiful and is all-natural. As a side note, these clams are hunted to near extinction for the aquarium industry and the food industry.

Sustainable

But, they have been aquacultured and bred in captivity, and it is one of the few forms of aquaculture farming that makes the environment cleaner than when it started. So, it is a very sustainable form of agriculture.

It provides them great water, a stable food source, and livelihood with exports for the locals. Unfortunately, all of this is excused to the giant Clam as an industry.

A Large Structure

Over a few years, the giant calm will become a significant structure in your tank, which, in turn, will become home to a lot of different organisms. One of the more interesting things about them is that Clownfishes can also host them under the right circumstances.

Not only will the Clowns in your tank, but the Clam itself also benefits from this codependent relationship. The clownfish produces waste which the Clam then sucks in and feeds off, creating a symbiotic relationship with the clownfish and the Clam. The clownfish get shelter and a place to lay their eggs, while the Clamp gets a good food source.

Spacious

Also, the shell of the Clam provides a nice place for stuff to live. It becomes an ecosystem in your reef. It is a great place for coral and algae to live, and one thing you will really like about it is how it shells itself.

So, with a clam, you provide a better filtering system for your fish. Keeping a giant clam in a tank, you will have a static appeal to it, and you are giving shelter to so many organisms.

They are hardy in exchange for a bit of food from your side. But, with these magnificent creatures, you need more stable water parameters, good calcium, alkalinity level, and a lot of light.

So, if you have a big enough tank, we highly recommend looking at a giant clam for your tank.

Happy Reefing!
