Top 5 Things to do When Picking out a New Saltwater Fish

Here are the top five things you should do before picking a new saltwater fish for your aquarium:

5. Observe the Fish

Look at your fish, observe them, and make sure they look and act as they should. To inspect the health, ensure that the fins are not rotted or suffer from bacterial issues.

4. Feed the Fish

If you have a fish actively eating, it's a great indicator of good health. Now, if the fish have a hollow belly and your fish store is willing to feed them, and the fish is eating well despite a little sunken stomach, it's not necessarily a deal breaker.

3. Is the Fish Quarantined

Quarantine is not necessary to be done at the store. But it is good to ask if the fish had been through quarantine or not so that you know what you are working with.

However, always ensure you quarantine the fish when you take it home.

2. Length of the Fish

Always ask how long the fish has been in the store. Typically when a fish arrives at a store, if something goes wrong, it will go wrong in the first week that it is there.

The stores also prefer to sell fish that has been sitting for a long time. So, make sure you get the older fish because, in the end, it is the best deal for both the hobbyist and the store.

1. Aquacultured

Aquacultured fishes are much more adapted to aquarium life. They will be much healthier because they are typically coming from a lab environment. Most breeder fish do not have any disease in their system. Therefore the fishes are generally more healthy.

But, once it leaves a breeder, there are many opportunities for it to get infected or diseased.
