Here are the top 5 of the most common mistakes that we aquarists make:
Mistake 5. Cross Contaminations
This applies to you only if you have multiple tanks that you are taking care of. So, before you take any of the tools you use in one tank and move them to the next, you want to ensure that you rinse them off. It might just be a tiny drop of water, but there are a lot of pathogens and things in that water that you can't see.
And you don't want to transfer them from one tank to the next. So that is going to be a massive headache for you.
So, ensure you wash your hands and the equipment with fresh water. Something else you can do to the equipment that can not be rinsed is to have a set of designated equipment for each tank.
Mistake 4. Research
Doing your research will show you that fish are compatible with other fish. Of course, the same goes for corals and inverts. But, it also applies to all the equipment you might be interested in.
So, before the purchase, make sure it will fit well in your tank and will be something you need. Sometimes people might overstock their tank and not have filtration, or on the other hand, they can have way too much filtration and have water that is just super clean. More so than the species, they are being kept preferred.
Mistake 3. Overfeeding
It is something that many of us have been guilty of, at least one or another time, and it is straightforward for it to happen. You walk by the tank, the fishes get excited, and you feed them. And you repeat it many times a day.
Well, not the fishes have learned that behavior. So, each time you walk by, you are adding a little bit more food, and next thing you know, you have a problem with really high nutrients in your tank. So, the best thing to do is understand how much food your fish needs daily.
It will save you the trouble of a lot of cleaning and help keep your fish healthier.
Mistake 2. Flooding
You can have a big trash can and stock the flooding; a great thing to do is to install a float valve. So, this way, if it's filled up, the valve turns off your RO unit, and you don't have an overflow. You can do the same thing in overflow buckets.
Or you can also set the timer on your phone just in case. This will help prevent any of those water spills from ruining your floors.
Mistake 1. Not Enough Patience
We have these mini ocean systems in our homes and want instant gratification. But that's not necessarily the case. You think about the wild oceans, and those didn't happen just at the snap of a finger.
In the reef, it takes time for things to grow, for coral to grow and color up, and it also takes time for problems to occur.
So, when dealing with those sorts of things, have patience. It is not going to fix itself overnight.
