8. Coppen Banded Butterflyfish
This icon of the hobby will be at the top of many people's lists. They have irresistible coup stripes lined in black with a white canvas with a pointy snout and laterally compressed bodies. They are as reef safe as Butterflyfishes can get, although they may eat the meaty LPS corals like Acans; but the trade-up is that they're known to eat Aptasia which can otherwise ruin your tank.
They will be fine in a tank with 125-gallon capacity or more, but the bad thing is that they are notoriously difficult to get feeding. So, all in all, they are a really tricky fish to keep, and also many will wither and die in a short period of time. Therefore, with this fish, it is advised to take all steps you can to make sure you can care for one of these before you buy it.
7. Clown Triggerfish
Triggerfishes are called so because of their trigger fins that they use to lock themselves into rocks at night and as a defense mechanism against anything brave enough to have a pop. Nothing in the hobby looks like this beast, but the beast is the right word to describe the trigger.
They are aggressive, not reef safe and you'll need a 300-gallon+ aquarium to keep one as they grow to over a foot and a half long. You will also need to choose BMF tankmates who can look after themselves and won't get bullied, but this doesn't need a nice personality to get on this list, it is just about the looks.
So, if you want a primadonna supermodel for your tank, this is your fish.
6. Moorish Idol
Morish Idol is also known as Gill you finding Nemo fans. There are much more graceful fish in the hobby with striking colors and the elongated rear fin, and a stumpy little mouth. But before you rush out to buy one, this is also one of the most difficult fish to keep.
They'll need a large established tank and a skill-dedicated aquarist to look after them, and even their longevity is a serious challenge in part because they have sponges in the wild which is difficult to provide in sufficient numbers in the home aquarium.
5. Tigerpyge Angelfish
This fish is a naturally occurring hybrid of two other stunning fish a Lemon-peel Angelfish and a Blue Angelfish. They are dwarf Angelfish which means that they are relatively easy to keep and there is a chance that they'll be reef safe although admittedly a fairly slim chance.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, these guys are as rare as they are expensive. If you are lucky enough to find one it will probably cost you more. They will need a tank for around 70-gallon although you should only keep one specimen in the tank as they can be aggressive with conspecifics.
4. Bandit Angelfish
This is what you'll get if you asked a 7-year old to draw a criminal fish. They grow to about 7-inches, so you'll nee da tank about 180-gallons or more. Also though they are seen in a reef tank, they are not known to be reef safe.
They are generally peaceful and less paired with other Angelfish and they are another rare and expensive fish in the hobby.
3. Goldfake Angelfish
Although there is no shortage of Yellowfish in the hobby, the same cannot be said for goldies, and it is the unique coloring that makes these guys so stunning. This is also one of the more attainable fish on this list. They are not too difficult to keep, and they are considered reef safe with caution which means that there is a reasonable chance that they'll be okay in a reef tank, particularly one without too many fleshy LPS corals.
They are also reef-safe and a little bit territorial and will be happy in a tank or around 125-gallon capacity.
2. Wrought Iron Butterflyfish
You may well need a change of trousers after seeing this resplendent Japanese native fish. In the wild, they're common as much by they are really imported for the hobby which combined with paying Japanese wages for collection means they are likely to set you back around 3-grand.
Being a Butterfly, it may well much on your corals, but it is so damn pretty you will forgive it for doing so. They are also not a very difficult fish to keep and supposedly they'll do well in an aquarium as small as 125-gallons.
1. Peppermint Angelfish
Aside from their beautiful looks, the most astonishing thing about these guys is the price tag. In the unlikely event, you come across one of these, you can expect to part with around 30,000 American Dollars. There are several reasons these fishes being so expensive. They are found around 7000 kilometers away from the coast of Australia and they swim in the rocks at depth of around 300-400 feet.
Unfortunately, there isn't much information available about keeping them in home aquariums. So, for now, we all just have to enjoy the beauty of this stunning fish through our computers only.
