Multi Color Angelfish: all you need to know

MULTICOLOR ANGELFISH

In this article, we will be learning about the multicolor angelfish also popular was Pastel Pygmy Angelfish or the Pearl back Angelfish. They are a super pretty and great one to add to your reef tank.

FIRST IMPRESSION

PRICE: You will normally spend about $100 to get one, but since it is so pretty and a bit rare at some places you might have to as much as $150 -$200 for one. So, you definitely have to pay a pretty penny to get these guys in your tank.

TANK SIZE: You will need about 75-gallon, a good 4-foot across tank which gives them plenty of swimming room to go around and have a good time.

CARE LEVEL: It is moderate.

TEMPERAMENT: They can be semi-aggressive, Angels can sometimes behave like Tangs whenever they are in a tank for longer periods of time. They tend t become the kings and queens of the tank so they will be aggressive towards the new fishes which you will add to your tank later.

So, yes as they get older, they will surely get territorial.

REEF SAFE: With caution, putting Angels in the reef tank is just too much of a risk. It is like a 50-50 chance if you get one, some people will get this Pygmy Angelfish and they do fine in the coral tank for them; they just swim around without picking on any coral, picking hair-algae.

Then you will hear a totally opposite story, where people put this fish in their coral tank and it would not stop picking at everything it can bit.

So, if you want to put it in your reef tank, you will have to risk it.

ORIGIN: They come from Marchall Island, which explains their high price tag.

TANK PARAMETERS

TEMPERATURE: You want to keep it from 72-78, try to keep it stable at 78.

APPEARANCE

MAXIMUM SIZE: They can get about 3-4 inches, they don't get huge.

COLORS: They are of really nice white-yellow and black body all mixed together. The blue accent all over its head and on fins catches everyone's eyes.

DIET: They are an omnivore, so they are going to need plenty of meaty food and a ton of algae to stay healthy. You can feed them

  • Little frozen cubes
  • Mysis
  • Brine shrimps
  • Spirulina is their favorite

apart from this, you will also have to feed them algae all the time. You can feed them sea veggies. The algae food will keep their colors look really nice, it will keep them really healthy and it keeps all those diseases off of them. They tend to be a lot happier whenever they get a bunch of algae.

COMPATIBILITY

ADDING TWO AT A TIME

This fish is seen doing well whenever they are placed with other Angelfishes, but it is best to add them at the same time otherwise they will get way to territorial. So if you do want to mix two Pygmy Angels so do add them at the same time, this way they can get along pretty well.

DEEPWATER SWIMMER

This is a deep water swimmer of a fish so you want to have plenty and plenty of rock structures in the tank. It loves going tough those dark places in the tank and hang out. So do have tons of structures in which they can go and hide and be comfortable.

LOVES PICKING ROCKS

They love picking at the rocks too, it's good to have a lot of live rock in your tank because he will be constantly picking at the rocks looking for algae which also is a turn down fro if you have a coral tank because by doing this it will damage your corals for sure.

It is an extremely sensitive fish to copper-based medication so sometimes you tend to have to do a freshwater dip instead in case it has any issues because for some reason that copper is just too tough on him.
