5 Things About the Aquarium Hobby Nobody Tells You

Here are the top 5 things expert aquarists fish know before starting the hobby:

You'll Kill Fish

No matter what you do or how good you are, some fish will die. It's not always your fault. It can be a simple accident, you go to feed your fish, get away for a minute, and the fish jumps out.

It is the unfortunate part of the hobby!

But, as aquarists, we can do our best to minimize that and prevent that as much as possible. But, do know that there will always be some death, be it dying of old age.

Filteration is Important But not the End-All-Be-All.

Yes, it is essential to have some filtration, but the gains are so minimal after you have a filter. Pick any filter on the market, and if you have a filter and it has any amount of bacteria in it, it will handle your aquarium.

There are intricacies on how to service it, how you might like it, how much noise it makes, how much it costs, and things like that.

So, if you have one filter, learn how it works and optimizes it as much as possible. But don't go down the rabbit hole and try everything before you settle on something.

Everybody in the Hobby is Nuts

Whether good or bad, there is an array of people who believe only their way is right. But make sure you learn from someone you enjoy and take less from them.

Moreover, the aquarium hobby is something you do yourself. Of course, you can get bits and pieces of knowledge from others, but we're all in this giant experiment; let's see who can keep a fish in a glass box the best.

But, many forget that the best is the most enjoyment where your fishes are healthy, happy, they're breeding. And, if you are missing that enjoyment part, you are not doing this hobby the way it was meant to be done.

You'll Buy Too Much Fish Food

For some reason, we all fall into the trap of buying excess food for our fish. So, know that it is there and you will spend lots of money on it; hopefully, if you get enough fish tanks, you won't waste them because stale food isn't good for fish.

So, the problem with food is that they all have a different target, be it coloration, health, how much it pollutes the aquarium or its price. So, you'll go through these different phases in your hobby, like maybe I want the healthier fish, because at the beginning you're killing fish.

Know that this is a natural process; you have to try it all, so you don't feel like you are missing out, then you can come back and settle on, okay, this is what I feed my fishes.

Every Aquarium is an Experiment

You don't know the outcome. So, just because you have the same tank size as another tank in your house, the food, water chemistry, and fish will all be different.

It is like a new recipe every time you do it, and the outcome is not always the same. So, that's why we get to learn so much.

So, go into the hobby with a learner's mindset.
