The Greenstreaked Eartheater is a peaceful and colorful freshwater fish that originates from South America. They can grow up to 6 inches in length and can live for up to 10 years with proper care. They have a light blue base color with green stripes running along their body, hence their name. They are known for their distinctive shape with a slightly rounded head and a longer, more tapered body. These fish are best kept in groups of at least 6 individuals, as they are social and enjoy the company of their own kind.
The Greenstreaked Eartheater is an omnivore that requires a varied diet to maintain optimal health. They will accept a wide range of foods, including high-quality pellets, frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small insects. It is recommended to feed them small meals several times a day to mimic their natural feeding habits.
Male and female Greenstreaked Eartheaters have very similar physical features, but males tend to be slightly larger and have more pronounced fin rays. During breeding, males may develop more intense coloration and longer fins.
Breeding the Greenstreaked Eartheater can be a challenging but rewarding experience. These fish form monogamous pairs and will create territories within the aquarium. It is recommended to provide them with caves or other hiding places for spawning. The female will lay up to 200 eggs, which will hatch within 2-3 days. The fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp and should be removed from the main tank until they are large enough to fend for themselves.
Like all fish, Greenstreaked Eartheaters are susceptible to a range of diseases, including ich, fin rot, and bacterial infections. Maintaining good water quality and ensuring that the fish are not stressed can help prevent these illnesses. Quarantining new fish before adding them to the main tank can also help prevent the spread of disease.
The Greenstreaked Eartheater is native to the Amazon basin in South America, where it inhabits slow-moving streams and tributaries.
The Greenstreaked Eartheater is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish. However, they may become territorial during breeding, so it is important to provide ample hiding places for other fish in the tank. They may also eat small fish or invertebrates, so it is best to avoid keeping them with very small tankmates.
When introducing new Greenstreaked Eartheaters to the aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly to prevent shock. The fish should be floated in a bag on the surface of the tank water for at least 15 minutes to allow the temperature to equalize. Small amounts of tank water can then be added to the bag over a period of several hours until the fish are ready to be released into the main tank.
