Checkerboard Cichlid

General information

Commonly known as the Checkerboard Cichlid, Dicrossus filamentosus is a freshwater fish species that belongs to the family Cichlidae. 
The Checkerboard Cichlid is a small fish that grows up to 6 cm in length. It has a unique checkerboard pattern on its body, which is where it gets its common name. The fish has a silver-gray body with black markings on its scales, and its fins are transparent with blue and black stripes. This species is not aggressive and can be kept in small groups in a community tank with other peaceful fish.

In the wild, Checkerboard Cichlids are omnivorous and feed on small invertebrates and insects. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen or live food such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

Male Checkerboard Cichlids are typically larger and have longer fins than females. During breeding, males will develop a nuchal hump on their forehead, which is used to attract females.

Checkerboard Cichlids are egg layers and breed in pairs. The fish require soft and acidic water with a pH of around 6.0-6.5 and a temperature of around 26-28°C. The female will lay eggs on a flat surface such as a leaf, rock or flowerpot, and the male will fertilize them. Both parents will then protect the eggs and fry.

Like most fish, Checkerboard Cichlids are susceptible to common fish diseases such as ich, fin rot, and fungal infections. Maintaining good water quality and regular tank maintenance can help prevent disease outbreaks.

Checkerboard Cichlids are native to the Amazon basin in South America, specifically Brazil and Peru.

Checkerboard Cichlids are a peaceful species and should not be housed with larger or aggressive fish that may harass or harm them.

When introducing Checkerboard Cichlids to a new tank, it is important to acclimate them slowly to prevent stress and disease. Float the fish in a plastic bag in the new tank for 15-20 minutes to allow them to adjust to the temperature difference. Then, gradually add small amounts of water from the new tank to the bag over a period of 1-2 hours before releasing the fish into the tank.
