About Black Lancer Catfish

General information

The Black Lancer Catfish, also known as the Silver Lancer Catfish, is a freshwater fish belonging to the family Bagridae. It is native to the river systems of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. It is a popular aquarium fish due to its unique appearance and active nature. The fish can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length and has a lifespan of 6 to 10 years.
They have sharp spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins that can cause injury to other fish and humans if not handled carefully.

Diet & nutrition

In the wild, the Black Lancer Catfish feeds on a variety of foods, including insects, crustaceans, and small fish. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also accept high-quality commercial pellets and flakes.

Determining sex

Males are typically larger and have longer pectoral fins than females. During breeding, males will develop a noticeably larger and more muscular head.

Breeding & spawning

Breeding the Black Lancer Catfish in captivity can be challenging due to their secretive nature. Males will chase females around the tank and will lay eggs on a flat surface, such as a piece of slate or ceramic tile. The eggs will hatch within a few days, and the fry will become free-swimming within a week.

Diseases

The Black Lancer Catfish is generally hardy and not susceptible to many diseases if kept in clean and well-maintained water conditions. However, like all fish, they are susceptible to parasitic and bacterial infections, which can be treated with appropriate medication.

Origination

The Black Lancer Catfish is native to the freshwater river systems of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia.

Cautions

The Black Lancer Catfish is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish. However, they have sharp spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins that can cause injury to other fish and humans if not handled carefully.

Acclimation process

The Black Lancer Catfish should be acclimated slowly to the aquarium environment. This can be done by floating the fish in a bag of aquarium water in the tank for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the temperature to equalize. Afterward, the fish should be released into the tank, taking care not to introduce the water from the bag into the tank.
