About True L46 Zebra Pleco

General information

Known as one of the most popular and beautiful species of catfish, the True L46 Zebra Pleco is a small, freshwater species that originates from Brazil's Rio Xingu. Due to their vibrant black and white striped pattern, they have become a popular choice among aquarists. Here's what you need to know about this species:
The True L46 Zebra Pleco is a small species, growing to around 3-4 inches in length. They are typically nocturnal and shy, often hiding in caves or crevices during the day. Keeping them in a dimly lit aquarium with plenty of hiding places is essential. They prefer a pH range of 6.0-7.0 and a water temperature range of 78-82°F.

Diet & nutrition

In the wild, True L46 Zebra Plecos are primarily carnivorous, feeding on insects, crustaceans, and other small aquatic animals. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet, including high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, and brine shrimp.

Determining sex

Males and females are difficult to distinguish. However, males have a slightly broader head and longer pectoral fins than females.

Breeding & spawning

Breeding True L46 Zebra Plecos in captivity can be challenging. They require pristine water conditions, high oxygen levels, and caves or other suitable spawning sites. Females lay a small number of eggs, which the male will then fertilize and guard until hatching.

Diseases

Like many freshwater fish, True L46 Zebra Plecos are susceptible to common diseases such as ich, fin rot, and fungal infections. Regular water changes and a healthy diet can help prevent these illnesses.

Origination

The True L46 Zebra Pleco is native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, where it is considered a threatened species due to habitat loss and overfishing.

Cautions

The True L46 Zebra Pleco is a relatively peaceful species that can be kept with other small, peaceful fish. However, they can be territorial towards their own kind, so it is best to keep them in pairs or small groups. They have a sharp dorsal fin that can cause injury, so handle them with care.

Acclimation process

Like all fish, True L46 Zebra Plecos should be acclimated slowly to their new aquarium environment. Float the bag in the aquarium for 15-20 minutes to allow the temperature to equalize before releasing them into the tank.
