About Denison Barb

General information

This species is torpedo shaped and silvery with a red horizontal stripe going from its head to the body and a black line right below the red one, these individuals can reach 6 inches. To keep these fish in captivity, water pH should range from 6.5 to 7.8 and water temperatures should be between 59ºF and 77ºF. The tank should have dense vegetation and open areas for swimming. These fish can be kept in a community aquarium. They should be kept in groups of at least 6. Collection of wild fish is prohibited to an extent since these fish are listed as “Endangered”  in the IUCN Red List.

Diet & nutrition

This species is omnivorous. It can be fed with dried, live and frozen foods.

Determining sex

Mature females are larger, rounder and less colorful than males.

Origination

This species can be found in southern India.

Cautions

This species occurs in pristine habitats in nature so it is extremely intolerant to pollutants and requires a very clean water.
