Gold Barb

General information

These fish are golden with red tinted fins and black patches along their flanks, they can reach 3.1 inches. This form is not their natural form and is the result of years and years of captive-breeding. To keep these fish in captivity, water pH should be between 6.0 and 8.0 and water temperature should range from 73.4 ºF and 80.6ºF. The tank should have dense vegetation and dark substrate. They can be kept in a community aquarium as long as their tankmates are of the same size as them. They should be kept in groups of 5 or more.

This species is omnivorous. It feeds on diatoms, algae and small insects. In captivity, it can be fed with live and frozen foods and dried foods.

Mature females are rounder and larger than males and males have more black patches than females.

Puntius sachsii is an egg-scatterer and exhibits no parental care. The adults should be separated from the eggs because they will eat the eggs if given the chance.

This species can be found in Southeast China.
