Water parameters

Temp 76-80 F Temperature

Maintaining a stable and appropriate temperature is critical for the survival of aquatic life.

pH 7.8 - 8.4 potential of Hydrogen

Measuring the acidity or alkalinity of water on a 0–14 scale, where 7 is neutral, 7 is alkaline.

NO3 1-20 ppm Nitrate

While less toxic than ammonia, high nitrate levels (above 40–80 ppm) are important to monitor because they can cause fish stress, stunted growth, and harmful algae blooms.

NO2 <0.0001 ppm Nitrite

It is a highly toxic, intermediate compound in the nitrogen cycle produced from broken-down ammonia

PO4 0.01 - 0.1 ppm Phosphate

It is essential for plant development but must be managed, as excess levels trigger nuisance algae blooms and inhibit coral calcification.

NH3 <0.1 ppm Ammonia

It is the primary killer of aquarium fish, causing gill damage, stress, and death

Ca 380 - 450 ppm Calcium

Supporting the growth, skeletal structure, and shell formation of corals, mollusks, crustaceans, and coralline algae

KH 8 - 12 dKH Alkalinity

It acts as a shield, neutralizing acids to prevent dangerous pH "crashes" that can harm fish, corals, and plants.

Mg 1200 - 1400 ppm Magnesium

It enables coral growth by supporting skeletal formation, assists in metabolic processes, and ensures that calcium is available for corals, clams, and coralline algae.

SG 1.023 - 1.026 SG Salinity

Essential for maintaining stable, natural water parameters, proper osmoregulation, and stress-free environments for marine fish and corals

ORP 250 - 400 mV Oxidation-Reduction Potential

A higher positive mV indicates clean, oxygen-rich water with high water quality, while low readings indicate high pollution.

About Fowleria Cardinalfish

General information

Fowleria Cardinalfish (Fowleria isostigma) is a species of marine fish in the Apogonidae family. They are a small-sized fish, growing up to 3.5 inches (9 cm) in length. They are known for their distinct black and white stripes, which run vertically along their body. These fish are peaceful and can be kept in groups in larger aquariums.

Diet & nutrition

Fowleria Cardinalfish are carnivorous and primarily feed on small crustaceans, such as copepods and amphipods, as well as small fish in the wild. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality frozen and live foods, such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and krill. It's also recommended to supplement their diet with a high-quality pellet or flake food designed for marine fish.

Determining sex

It is difficult to distinguish between male and female Fowleria Cardinalfish. However, during breeding, the females will appear rounder and more full-bodied than the males.

Breeding & spawning

Fowleria Cardinalfish have been bred in captivity. Breeding requires a specific set of conditions, including a separate breeding tank, a strict feeding regimen, and ideal water parameters. The males will court the females, and the females will lay adhesive eggs on the substrate or the underside of a rock. The eggs will hatch in approximately 4-6 days, and the fry will become free-swimming a few days after that.

Diseases

Fowleria Cardinalfish are generally hardy and not prone to many diseases if kept in proper conditions. However, they can be susceptible to typical saltwater fish diseases such as ich and velvet. These diseases can be treated with medications like copper or formalin, but it's always best to quarantine new fish before introducing them to an existing tank.

Origination

Fowleria Cardinalfish are native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around the Philippines and Indonesia.

Cautions

Fowleria Cardinalfish are generally considered safe to keep in a home aquarium. However, they may become territorial towards other small fish of the same species or closely related species. It's best to keep them in a tank with other peaceful fish and avoid housing them with aggressive or larger fish.

Acclimation process

When introducing new Fowleria Cardinalfish to an aquarium, it's important to properly acclimate them to their new environment. This can be done by floating the bag containing the fish in the aquarium water for 10-15 minutes to equalize the temperature, then gradually adding small amounts of aquarium water to the bag over the course of 1-2 hours.
